South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) has been working hard with local education providers to promote concessionary travel for young people living in South Yorkshire and to simplify the application process.

Young people who reside in the county are eligible to apply for either an 11-16 MegaTravel Pass or a 16-18 Student Pass.

These free passes entitle school and college students under the age of 18 to travel for a child concessionary fare (currently 70p per journey) on bus and tram, and half fare on Northern Rail train services in South Yorkshire.

Passes also prove to bus drivers, tram conductors and ticket collectors that their holders are eligible to purchase a range of value-for-money child and student tickets from bus and tram operators, including prepaid weekly tickets offering unlimited travel across South Yorkshire from as little as 72p per day.

Who is eligible?

MegaTravel Pass holders must be under 16 and early application prior to the commencement of the new school term in September is encouraged in order to benefit from discounted travel over the summer holidays.

16-18 Student Pass holders must be under 18 and registered in full time education.  New students applying for the first time will be given a unique code upon enrolment at school, college or training to complete their application.

How to apply

The quickest way to apply for an 11-16 MegaTravel Pass or a 16-18 Student Pass is online by using a MyTSY account.  Full details can be found at www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/ticketspasses/.

Customers that are unable to do it online can still apply, renew and replace their pass using the methods below, however their application will take longer to process:

  • by phone by calling Traveline 01709 51 51 51
  • by posting a completed application form to: Contact Centre, SYPTE, 11 Broad Street West, Sheffield S1 2BQ, or via a drop-box at any Interchange Customer Service Desk.

Paper application forms are available from Interchange Customer Service Desks.  Passes will be processed within 7 working days for online applications and within 21 working days for phone and postal applications.  Passes will be posted to the customer’s home address which must be within South Yorkshire.

16-18 Student Pass – Changes for 2016

SYPTE has been working with schools and colleges to simplify the 16-18 Pass application process for returning students.  At some schools students who will be studying for a second year, will automatically have their pass processed and ready for collection on their return to education.  A list of the schools participating in this scheme will be provided in July.  Second year students at colleges not participating in the scheme will need to follow the same process as new students outlined above.

Both new and returning students at Sheffield College will also benefit from having their passes automatically processed as we are working with the college on a pilot to simplify the process for students.

Child concessionary fares  – price increase

SYPTE receives funding for concessionary fares from the local authorities in South Yorkshire.  This budget has been reduced year on year as local government continues to face savings across the services it provides.

As a result of these savings, the single child concessionary fare in South Yorkshire will increase by 10p from 18 September 2016, from 70p to 80p.  However, Barnsley’s MiCard child concession, available to children aged 5 – 16 and living in Barnsley, will remain at 60p.
