6 Oct

Hate Crime Awareness Week runs from 8-14 October 2016.

Sheffield City Council is working with partners, including the police, to help raise awareness of what hate crime is and to encourage people to report it.

Get involved:

  • Please help spread the message about what hate crime is and that we do not accept it
  • Report hate crime and encourage others to report it
  • Get involved online during hate crime awareness week

What is hate crime and what are hate incidents?

Hate crime is a crime believed to be motivated by someone’s hostility or prejudice towards a person because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender identify.

Hate incidents are things that happen for the same reason but do not amount to a crime.

These can include: name calling, hitting and punching, being made fun of, bullying, being frightened by someone, and having your things stolen or damaged.

It is important that all hate crimes and incidents are reported.

Report hate crime

Please report all hate crime and incidents to South Yorkshire Police online (www.southyorks.police.uk/hatecrime) or by calling 101. Contact 999 in any emergency.

Get involved online during hate crime awareness week

From 8-14 October the council and police will be tweeting about hate crime using the #NHCAW hashtag.  Please join the conversation.

South Yorkshire Police is hosting a live web chat where people can send in any questions about hate crime which will be answered by the force’s hate crime lead.

This runs on Tuesday 11 October from 7pm – 8pm.

Please visit www.southyorks.police.uk/hatecrime to get involved.
