Top Tips to Beat Winter Illness

1. Keep Hands Clean

Washing your hands using soap and water is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and others from illnesses such as food poisoning and flu.

  • Sing “Happy Birthday” twice to make sure you’re washing your hands for at least 20 seconds
  • You can find a child friendly song from the NHS explaining how to wash hands here
  • Make sure children use tissues/toilet paper and dispose of them after sneezing, then remember to wash hands after

2. Stop Infection Spreading

  • Community pharmacists can offer advice and over the counter medicines to effectively manage a range of health concerns, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, earaches, eye infections and many more
  • Do you have a child who has been ill at school? Keeping them off school is essential to preventing the spread of infection. Check with your school and use this guide for the most common winter illnesses:
Diarrhoea and vomiting Exclude whilst symptomatic and 48 hours after the last symptoms
Flu (influenza) Exclude until recovered

3. Keep Antibiotics Working

  • Don’t ask for antibiotics if you have a cough, cold or virus. If antibiotics are taken inappropriately, harmful bacteria can become resistant and stop medicine working when really needed
  • To help prevent antibiotic resistance, antibiotics should only be taken when prescribed and never saved for later use or shared with others
