Walkley Community Centre launches the ‘Luminous Picture’ Photo Competition

“Give me some mud off a city crossing, some ochre out of a gravel-pit, a little whitening, and some coal dust, and I will paint you a luminous picture…” John Ruskin

As part of this year’s Walkley Festival , Walkley Community Centre is launching the ‘Luminous Picture’ Photo Competition.  It has chosen a photography competition because with a camera phone, anyone can take a striking photo, young and older people, people born in Sheffield or people born far away. The competition is for photos of people, places or things in Walkley, South Yorkshire on the theme of light, bright or very colourful which capture the imagination.  It would be great if people  find inspiration at the community centre and festival events but whatever people find that strikes them as ‘luminous’ the centre wants to see it!  Entry is free and there are three classes: children (under 12s) young people (13 to 19) and adults. The competition is now open and the closing date is midnight on Friday 7th July 2017.

The judges are centre trustees Carrie Leyland and Natalie Allistone who both bring both a knowledge of and a passion for Walkley, with its rich Ruskininian heritage with the community centre at its heart. The judge’s prize is tea and cakes at Gerry’s Bakery & Café, kindly donated by Walkley’s wonderful local artisanal bakery on South Road and there will be runner-up commendations. The centre will be sharing photos on social media through-out the festival period and wants people to get in touch and let them us know their favourites.

Light, bright, colourful Walkley is the theme! To enter post on Facebook or Twitter using #walkley12 (children under 12), #walkley13 (young people aged 13 to 19), or #walkley19 (adults) – don’t forget to make the photo public. Or you can email it to (with your name & age) Full terms and conditions of the competition appear on the centre’s website so please check them out and the winner will be announced on the centre’s website on 14th July 2017. Please spread the word about Walkley Community Centre’s ‘Luminous Picture’ Photo Competition now!
